Sports-related knee pain in Cairo affects players of all ages and levels, from professional footballers to weekend recreational athletes. Understanding the common causes helps identify when to rest versus when to urgently seek specialist care.
A dull ache behind or around the kneecap, worse on stairs and after long sports sessions. This is usually a training overload issue, NOT structural damage. Responds well to physiotherapy and activity modification.
Pain after a twisting injury or collision. An ACL tear causes immediate swelling and instability. Must be assessed urgently with MRI. See our ACL page for details.
Joint-line pain during or after sports, sometimes with clicking or locking. Often occurs with ACL injuries. Requires MRI and potentially arthroscopic surgery. See the Meniscus Treatment page.
Sharp pain on the outer side of the knee during running, typically at a specific "stride" point. Very common in cyclists and long-distance runners. Usually treated with physiotherapy and foam rolling.
Pain just below the kneecap in jumping sport athletes (basketball, volleyball). Caused by overuse of the patellar tendon. Responds to eccentric strengthening exercises and, in resistant cases, PRP injection.
For athletes over 35, persistent knee pain after sports may indicate early cartilage wear. See our Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment page for management options.

Mild, symmetrical aching after intense exercise is normal and settles within 24-48 hours. Specific pain on one side, swelling, or locking is not normal.
You need an MRI if you have: swelling after an injury, pain that does not improve in 2 weeks, a feeling of the knee giving way, or locking.
Playing through sharp, mechanical knee pain risks turning a minor injury into a major one. If in doubt, stop and get assessed. Ignoring early symptoms is Egypt's #1 cause of missed meniscus tears that require surgery later.
